Japanese Foregin Aggression
The Japanese governement signed an international treaty promising to respect China's borders. By signing the pact they renounced war on China. However because of economic problems Japan wanted a foreign expansion including the takeover of China.they believed to solve their problem a Pacific empire would help form economic stability. Japan wishes to take China's raw materials and markets. It would also help give room for Japan's rising population. -
Japan invades Manchuria
Japan invaded China's northeast province because of their richness in iron and coal in 1931. They built mines and factories setting up a puppet government. This was the first direct challenge to the League of Nations. The League protested, however Japan ignored them and withdrew from the League in 1933. -

Germany defied the treaty first by rearming and then again when the conquered the Rhineland The French and British wanted to keep the peace and so the turned to appeasement and let Germany have the Rhineland -

General Francisco Franco favored a fascist style gov. and started a revolt in Spain. hitler and Mussolini sent troops airplane and tanks to help him. -
Japan invades China
The invasion of China came four years later after a border incident. This caused a full-scale war between Japan and China. China's large army was no match for the better equipped and trained Japan. The capital Nanjing fell to Japan in 1937 effectively killing thousands of Chinese soldier and citizens. -

Hitler conquers Poland
Hitler bombed the capital of Poland Warsaw and France and Great Britain and they then declare war in Germany. The invasion of Poland was known as the first blitzkrieg. -
The Phoney War
After the allies declared war in Germany they mobilized their armies but neither side made advances in the war. Then Germany made a surprise attack in Denmark and Norway and both cities fell. So now the Germans could build bases along the Norwegian coastlines so they could attack Great Britain. -
The Fall of France
Hitter sweeped through the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Ardennes. He wanted to get to the Maginot and from there his troops moved to France's northern coast. The Allies retreated to Dunkirk and Great Britain sent a fleet to come and rescue them from German bombers. However, the Germans took Paris and the French surrendered. -
Pearl Harbor
On this morning American sailors at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii woke up to a surprise Japan bombing. The U.S. military leaders knew an attack could come but didn't know when, the bombing took them by surprise. More than 2,300 Americans were killed and over 1,100 were injured during the attack.
