Marceline, Missouri
Walt's family moved to a farm in Marceline, Missouri where Walt developed his love for drawing with a family neighbor named Doc Sherwood. Doctor Sherwood paid Walt to draw pictures of Sherwood's horse Rupert. -
First Year of School
Walt attened the new Park School of Marceline in the fall of 1909. Started school with younger sister Ruth and before this school he had no formal schooling. -
Selling the Farm
The Disney family has to sell their farm home because they said there was too much work and money being put into the home and that left them with little to no extra spending money. -
Moving to Kansas City
After selling their home in Marceline, Missouri the family moved to Kansas City. Walt and Ruth atteneded the Benton Grammar School -
Kansas City Star
Elias (Walt's Father) purchased the Kansas City Star newspaper route and Walt and his brother Roy were put to work deliving the Kansas City Times. -
Newspaper Schedule
Woke up at 4:30 AM and delivered newspaper until the school bell rang he then went to school and after we was done with school he would start delivering papers again at 4 PM all the way up until dinner time. Walter Elias Disney found the work exhausting and during school was often found dozing off from all the lack of sleep because of the job. Walt had this schedule of delivering papers for 6 years. -
Freshmen Year
Walt started his freshman year of high school at McKinley High School. Took night courses at Chicago Academy of Fine Arts after his father moved the family back to Chicago. -
High School Years
Attended McKinley High School. Became a cartoonist for the shcool newspaper. He drew patriotic topics on World War I. Disney dropped out of high school at the age of 16 hoping to get into the army, but was rejected because of his age. -
Red Cross
Walter Elias Disney and his friend joined the Red Cross together and after joining he was soon sent to France for a year where he drove an ambulance, but only after the armistice was signed. -
Artistic Career
Moved back to Kansas City to begin his career of art. Consisdered being an actor, but decided to draw political caricatures for a newspaper. No one wanted to hire Walt so his brother Roy was working in a local bank and got Walt a temporary job through a colleague at the Pesmin-Rubin Art Studio. -
Animation Career Started
Disney and Iwerks started a company called "Iwerks-Disney Commercial Artists" Made commercials based on cutout animation. Disney decided to read a book Animated Cartoons: How They Are Made, Their Origin and Development. After reading this book he decided animation would be a better buisness to be successful in. Opened an animation buisness. Fred Harman was his first employee. Disney and Harman created cartoons known as Laugh-O-Grams. -
Laugh-O-Grams Studio
Disney and a few other people worked together to open a studio for their Laugh-O-Grams and for somewhere that they could develop them. However, the studio was not very successful because of the money they earned had to pay employees and the companies had a hard time mangaging money. The company shut down and eventually would go bankrupt because of all the debt that they were in. -
Disney Brother's Studio
Disney and one of his brothers, Roy, moved to Hollywood and invested their money to open a cartoon studio. The studio was located on Hyperion Avenue in the SIlver Lake district. A few cartoons that Disney Brother's Studio's created are: Alice, Oswald and Lucky Rabbit and MIckey Mouse. -
Marriage
Disney hired a young woman at the Disney Brother's Studio named Lillian Bounds. Her job was to ink and paint celluloid. That year that they met they decided they were soul mates and a couple months later got married. -
Mickey Mouse
Mickey Mouse was created because of the loss of Oswald. He felt like he needed to create a new character. He decided to create a mouse because while living in Kansas City and working in Laugh-O-Grams studio he adopted a pet mouse. Mickey's voice and personality were provided by the creator himself, Walt Disney up until 1947. On November, 18, 1932 he recieved a special Academy Award for the creation of Mickey Mouse. -
Orphan's Benefit
In 1934 was the first time Donald Duck appeared with Mickey Mouse. -
Time for Color
In 1935 the Mickey Mouse series switched to color and created spin-off versions of Donald Duck, Goofy and Pluto. -
