The Tonkin Gulf resolution
After the alleged attack on U.S. ships by the North Vietnamese, congress approved President Johnson's request for broad military powers. This was not a declaration of war. -
Operation Rolling Thunder
In response to a Vietcong attack that killed eight Americans, President Johnson unleashed "Operation Rolling Thunder". The operation was the first sustained bombing of North Vietnam. -
My Lai massacre
In the small village of My Lai in Vietnam, a U.S. platoon searched for Vietcong rebels. After the platoon did not find any rebels they gathered up all the people in the town and shot more than 200 of them. -
The Invasion of Cambodia
U.S. troops invaded Cambodia to clear out North Vietnamese and Vietcong supply centers. -
Kent State massacre
After a massive student protest at Kent State University, the local mayor called in the national Guard. The Guards ended up firing live ammunition into a crowd of campus protestors which led to the death of four students. -
The Fall of Saigon
Several years after U.S. troops left Vietnam and a peace agreement had been agreed to North Vietnamese launched a full-scale invasion against South Vietnam. The North vietnamese ceased Saigon and made Vietnam one united communist state.
