The British decided to attack the nations capital. In August 1814 the British attacked and destroyed Washington D.C. Dolley Madison the presidents wife saved important papers from the White House. The burning of the White House shocked many Americans. -
Writing of The Star Spangeled Banner
During the night of September 13, 1814 Francis Scott Key watched the attack. The American Flag was still standing during the battle. The Americans won the battle.Key wrote a poem about the battle. In 1931 his poem became the nations national anthem, known as the Star Spangled Banner. -
Hartford Convention
December 1814 Federalists meet in Hartford Connecticut. Some delegates suggested that the New England states shoild secede. Soon the delegates hear of a peace treaty and the convention ends. -
Treaty of Ghent
By 1814 Britan gets annoyed with war. Talks of peace began in Ghent Beligum. On Christmas Eve the two sides made a treaty. It took two weeks for the news to reach the United States causing one last battle. -
Battle of New Orleans
In January 1815 American General Andrew Jackson won a victory against the British putting the war to an end.
