War Hawks Take Power
John C. Calhoun and Henry Clay were appointed to the House of Representatives in Congress. They were eager for war with Britain. They felt a sense of nationalism or pride in one's country. -
Relations with Great Britain Worsen
In early 1812, the British told the U.S. they would continue impressing sailors. Also, Native Americans in the Northwest began attacks on frontier settlements. Americans were angry with Britain. -
Congress Declares War on Britain
In June of 1812 Congress declared war on Britain because the British were impressing sailors and the Native Americans continued to attack frontier settlements. -
America is not Ready for War
The United States was not ready for war in June of 1812. Thomas Jefferson had cut spending and that weakened the American military strength. The Navy had only 16 warships and the Army was also small. -
Britain Blokades American Ports
In July of 1814 the British blocked American ports. The British navy had 135 warships blockading American ports. -
Invasion of Canada
In July 1812 American troops, under General William Hull invaded Canada. British General Isacc Brock took advantage of the invasion and captured 2,000 American soldiers. It was a serious defeat for the U.S.. -
USS Constritution scores a victory
In August 1812 a major sea battle was fought in the North Atlantic between the United States and British. The ship USS Constitution defeated the British warship Guerriere. It was a fierce battle. -
Battle of Lake Erie
In September 1813 on Lake Erie a three hour battle was fought in the Put-In Bay. The United States won that battle. Commander Perry announce his victory by saying "We have met the enemy and they are ours!" Britian was forced to leave Detroit. -
Battle of Thames
The United States followed the British into Canada in October 1812. William Henry Harrison led the Americans into the Battle of Thames and killed the Native American General, Tecumseh. -
Battle of Horseshoe Bend
In March 1814, Andrew Jackson took command of the troops in Georgia. He defeated the Creeks. The Treaty that ended the Battle of Horseshoe Bend made the Creeks give up millions of acres of land. -
Washington, D.C Attacked & Burnrned
In August 1814 the British set fire to several government buildings, including the White House in the capital of Washington, D.C. -
Attack on Baltimore & the Writting of the Star Soangled Banner
On September 13, 1814 the Americans defeated the British at Fort McHenry. Francis Scott Key created the National Anthem after the battle was won. -
Hartford Convention
In December of 1814 in Hartford, Connecticut the Hartford Convention met and soon ended once the news of a peace treaty arrived. Once and for all the United States secured it's Independence from Britain. -
Treaty of Ghent
In Ghent, Belgium on December 24, 1814 both sides sign the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the war. The United States was officially independent. -
Battle of New Orleans
In January 1815 the United States led by Andrew Jackson defeated the British in New Orleans, Louisiana. Andrew Jackson won a stunning victory over the British.
