The Ottoman Empire
The Turkish (that actually came from really far in Asia) conquer the area that is now know as the Ottoman Empire. -
The Sykes-Picot agreement.
The French and the English wanted to conquer the Ottoman Empire. They couldn't do it alone, so they needed the help of the people that lived inside this empire (mostly Arabs). To get them to be on their side, they promised them a big country for themselves; The Great Arabia. But, this was a lie, and when they conquered the Ottoman Empire, they divided it in many "Countries", that were just small regions controled by them. One of this regions was Syria.
