    The School was incorporated in 1896 as St. Andrew’s School. For the first 72 years of its existence, St. Andrew’s was an orphanage, school, social service agency, school for student with disabilities and working farm under the auspices of the Episcopal Church. Father Chapin believed that St. Andrew’s should serve any student who needed it, regardless of race or religious background.

    President's Committee on Mental Retardation was established in October, 1961. Eunice Kennedy Shriver served as a special consultant and liaison between the panel and the White House with the cooperation of several Federal departments and agencies.

It was held in Chicago's Soldier Field, a legendary sporting venue. About 1,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities from 26 U.S. states and Canada competed in track and field, floor hockey and swimming. This was a way to start changing people’s mind towards people with disabilities. (SEE VIDEO)

    Section 504 is a federal law designed to protect the rights of individuals with disabilities in programs and activities that receive Federal financial assistance from the U.S. Department of Education (ED). Section 504 provides: "No otherwise qualified individual with a disability in the USA shall, solely by reason of her or his disability, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program receiving Federal financial support.
