Heters is brought before the elders because of having an affair and bearing a child from it. Hester will not tell them who the fauther is so is punished with wearing the scarlet letter and public shaming. -

After a long time of internal decay because of unconfessed sin, Dimmesdale finally confesses to the townspeople by revealing his own "scarlet letter," which he carved on his chest. This is his dying act. -
Leaving Boston
Dimmesdale leaves all of his wealth to Pearl, and Hester leaves to New England to escape the scene. She lives there for a long time until her daught grows up and marrys. -
Hester returns to home
Hester eventually comes back, and when she dies she is buried underneath a tombstone which alludes to her scarlet letter.
