THE HISTORY OF THE ATOM
-
J.J Thompson
He discovered that atoms contained negatively and positively charged particles called electrons. -
Dalton
All matter consists of tiny particles called atoms
Atoms could not be divided.
Atoms of the same element were alike.
Atoms combined in simple whole number ratios. -
Rutherford
Rutherford proposed that the atom consisted mostly of empty space and a dense nucleus containing positive charges
Negative charges orbited around the nucleus -
Bohr
Bohr modified the model of the atom by suggesting that electrons orbit the nucleus at different energy levels. -
Chadwick
The nucleus contained protons and neutrons and the electrons spun around the outside. he also found that Neutrons are neutral. -
Democritus
Democritus suggested that that all substances were made of tiny particles called atoms.
Essentially, Democritus discovered matter. Democritus believed that atoms made up everything and between atoms was invisible space.
