The Wooden Battleship USS Constitution (Old Ironside) is has been finished building and is ready for action. The USS Constitution fought British Ships during the war of 1812. The ship is still being maintained by Navy Personnel today. The successfulness of the USS Constitution in battle further invoked the need for stronger and more high quality materials in Naval vessels including battleships. -

These ships had heavy Armor that easily deflected canon balls and was the first time that any type of metal was used to armor a ship. The Monitor even without the metal armor was a breakthrough due to the fact that it was the first ship to feature a functioning rotating turret. -

Indiana Class Battleships Launched
This is an Indiana Class Battleship, a predecessor of the New York Class. These were the first battleships to be commissioned in the US Navy. The ship shown is BB-1 or the USS Indiana. She was stocked with four 13 inch main batteries as well as many secondary weapons(torpedoes, machine guns,etc.)powered by 4 boilers, and traveled at about 15.5 knots with a crew of 473. She was built by William Cramp & Sons, in Philadelphia. -
