This was a single day battle that had the Confederacy retreating. -
Homesead Act
Passed on May 20, 1862, the Homestead Act accelerated the settlement of the western territory by granting adult heads of families 160 acres of surveyed public land for a minimal filing fee and 5 years of continuous residence on that land. -
General Robert E Lee takes command
Gen Lee takes command of Southern forces and renames them the Army of Virgina. -
JEB Stuart begins ride around Mclellan
J. E. B. Stuart "rides around the Union Army," raiding supplies and battling small groups of Yankess during the Peninsula Campaign. -
7 days battle
Starting June 5th and ending July 1st this campaign was the first turning point in the war. It included battles at Beaver Dam, Gains Mill, and Malvern Hill. With a total of 34,000 casualties total, the South lost this battle and it became apperent that the South needed military leadership. Lee will become head of the whole army due to this loss. -
2nd Battle of Manassas (Bull Run)
August 28-30th, it was a confederate win. They flanked the Union and drove them back to Bull Run. There were about 22,000 casualties. -
Battle of Antietam
This was a single day battle which to this day remains the bloodiest day in American History with 22,000 casualties. The Confederate retreat gave Lincoln the "victory" he needed before signing the emacipation proclamation. -
Gen Ambrose E Burnside
Gen. Burnside replaces Gen. Mclellan as comander of Northern Army. -
Battle of Fredricksburg
December 11-15th, Burnside made a series of frontal attacks at Prospect Hill. However he had to call off the offensive and cross the river ending the campaign. There were 17,929 casualties in this battle. -
Emancipation Proclamation
The Emancipation Proclamation freed all slaves in the states that Lincoln called in rebellion against the Union, but not the slaves in the states that did not secede from the Union. -
Gen Joseph Hooker
Gen. Hooker replaces Gen. Burnside as comander of Union Army -
Battle of Chansellorsville
April 30th - May 6th. This battle is considered one of Lee's greatest victories. There were 31,000 casualties. And the only battle in which Burnside lead the Union forces. -
Gen Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson
Injured on May 2nd at the Battle of Chansellorsville by friendly fire. Died on May 10th. -
Battle of Vicksburg
May 18th - July 4th. Grants victory at Vicksburg boosted his reputation. There were 4,835 casualties. -

Gen Meade replaces Gen Hooker as head of the Union Army -

This 3 day battle was a major turning point in the Civil War where the Union won. Where by the third day with Picketts Charge cost many lives. The casualties numberd 23, 055. -

Battle of Mine Run
November 27 - December 6th. An unsuccessful attempt of the Union Army of the Potomac to defeat the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, it was marked by false starts and low casualties and ended hostilities in the Eastern Theater for the year. There were 1952 casualties. -

May 5th - 7th, Part of Grants Overland Campaign which included the battles of Tevilian Station, Spotsylvania, North Ana, and Cold Harbor. The battle of the Wilderness was inconclusive and the casualties were about 28,000 -

May 8 - 21st. Part of the Overland Campaign. It had a casualtiy number of about 30,000. It is incunclisive who won this specific battle. -
JEB Stuart
Gen Stuart dies -
Battle of Cold Harbor
MAy 31st - June 12th, part of the Overland Campaign. There were 15, 500 casualties and the Confederacy won this battle. -
Confederates evacute Atlanta
The Confedeacy evacuated Atlanta allwoing Sherman to enter on September 2nd. As they left they destroyed armories. And when Sherman leaves Atalnta is further destroyed. -
