Linda Brown, an african american girl, was denied enry to an all white school and her father sued the Topeka Board of Education. The case reached the Supreme Court, which ordered integration of schools. -
1956 State Flag
After Brown vs the board of Education, states urged whites to display acts of resistance and the General Assembly responded by changing the state flag. It included the Confederate flag, which was adopted by hate group such as the Ku Klux Klan. -
The Sibley Commission
The Sibley Commission was created to hold hearings about the public's opinion on the integration of achools. Most said they would rather close school instead of itegrating, so the commission let the school systems decide on the issue. -

The Voting Rights Act
A march was organized from Selma to Montgomery in which people protested for equal voting rights for African Americans. A law was finally passed and that allowed African Americans to have the same opportunity to vote as whites did. -
Lester Maddox becomes governor of GA
Even though Maddox was a firm believer in segregation, he ended up appointing more African Americans to state offices than any other governor before him. -

MLK is assassinated in Memphis, TN but he was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement and a firm believer in nonviolence. -
Maynard Jackson becomes mayor
Maynard Jackson becomes the first African American mayor of Atlant. During his term, the MARTA service began and Hartsfield Airport added a new International Terminal that helped the state's economy. -
