1st Continental Congress
FACTS:
1. Met in Philidalphia
2. All 13 colonies, excluding Georgia, sent delegates
3. While they were there, delegates voted to ban all
British trade until the Intolerable Acts were repealed,
and that all colonies begin training troops for battle. -
Lexington
FACTS:
1. 700 British troops and 70 Malitiamen fought at Lexington
2. Battle started because the British ordered the Malitiamen
to drop their weapons, but they refused.
3. Ralph Waldo Emerson's poem used the phrase "The
Shot Heard Around the World", to describe the first
shots of the revolution which happened during this
battle.
4. When this battle was over, the British began to march
to Concord. -
Concord
FACTS:
1. During this battle, there were 4000 colonists, which
outnumbered the British, or the 'Redcoats' by a lot!
2. This battle immediatly followed Lexington
3. The British ended up retreating after this battle. -
2nd Continental Congress
FACTS:
1. Delegates from the 13 colonies met in Philidalphia
2. This group met to discuss the Olive Branch
Petition, The Declaration of Independance, and The
Articles of Confederation.
3. This is also when George Washington was appointed
General of the Continental Army. -
Battle of Bunker Hill
FACTS:
1. Took place inbetween Breed's Hill and Bunker Hill
2. The Colonists were low on gunpowder, so they were
told, "Don't shoot til you see the whites of their eyes."
3. Fought British vs. Colonists
4. Colonists retreated at the end of this battle. -
Common Sense
FACTS:
1. This was a pamplet written by Thomas Paine
2. This was written to persuade the colonists into fighting
for their independance
3. This pamplet first sold 120,000 copies, which was a lot
for their time. -
Declaration of Independance
FACTS:
1. The comittee of members who teamed up to write this
document were Thomas Jefferson, John Adams,
Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert
Livingston, but Jefferson wrote the first draft.
2. They wrote this to declare to England that they are
going to be an independant country and nothing can
\ stop them from getting there.
3. Their writing was inspired by John Locke. -
Battle of New York
FACTS:
1. This battle is Britain vs. Colonies
2. British started this battle in hopes of capturing New York
City, in which they did.
3. Washington's army retreated at the end of the battle.
4. This battle was fought in New York City. -
Trenton
FACTS:
1. This battle was led by George Washington.
2. They surprise attacked the British by crossing the frozen
Deleware River on Christmas day.
3. Washington's army won this battle by a long shot! -
Princeton
FACTS:
1. This battle was fought at Princeton, New Jersey
2. This battle was fought Britain vs. Colonists
3. George Washington's army captured 300 British soldiers -
Saratoga
FACTS:
1. This battle was a major turning point in the war.
2. British General Burgoyne surrendured his whole army to
the Americans.
3. This was when we allied with France and Spain -
Winter at Valley Forge
FACTS:
1. Washington and his men spent the dreadful winter of
1777-1778 in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.
2. They were in dier need of food and warm clothes.
3. Marquis De Lafeyette, and very rich 19 year old, helped
finance their needs and trained them while doing so.
4. End date: Around January 20 - February 4, 1778. -
Battle of Yorktown
FACTS:
1. George Washington decided to set the ultimate trap as
Cornwallis' troops (British) made their way to Virginia.
2. Washington had over 16,000 American and French
soldiers ready to fight, all of them trapping Cornwallis
and his troops.
3. Washington led a 3 week attack on the British.
4. On October 17, 1781, Cornwallis surrendured the war
and the American won their Independance! -
Treaty of Paris 1783
FACTS:
1. This document was written to show that Britain
understood that the US was independant. 2. This document promised that the US would get all of the land east of the Mississippi river from Canada to Florida and that the US would return all property taken from the Loyalists. 3. This document ended the Revolutionary War.
