Lexington and Concord
The first battle of the Revolutionary War. Paul Revere and others had warned that the British were coming to seize all the weapons the colonists had. A group of people formed an army...the militia. They were not soldiers. They met the British Army in Concord and were defeated. Then, when word got around the countryside, other colonists came to help. They got together and defeated the British at Lexington. The British army was defeated and returned to Boston. -
Battle of Bunker Hill
The Colonists surrounded Boston. It was a difficult battle. The colonists ran out of ammunition and had to retreat. They had been winning the battle. The British troops lost alot of soldiers -
Declaration of Independence signed
Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence stating that the colonies will form a new country free from England. It will be called the United States of America. This is the paper that begins our country. -
Battle of Trenton
George Washington and his army surprised the Hussiens in Trenton, New Jersey on Christmas morning. This was a much needed victory by the Continental Army after they had suffered many defeats. -
Battle of Saratoga
The Battle of Saratoga was a battle that some say was the turning point in the Revolution War. Continental forces, under General Benedict Arnold, defeated the British Army under General Bergoyne. The British army surrendered 7000 troops. This battle showed that the Americans could win the war, and convinced France to join the fight. -
Battle of Monmouth
George Washington chased General Howe as he was headed back to New York. It was one of the hottest days of the year. More soldiers died from heat-stroke rather than from battle wounds. An unknown lady helped bring water to the Continental soldiers, thus beginning the legend of "Molly Pilcher" -
Battle of Cowpens
In South Carolina, Daniel Morgan led a group of southern militia against Lt Col. Tarleton of the British Army at the Battle of Cowpens in South Carolina. The British had been chasing Morgan and Nathaniel Greene all over the Carolinas. The victory over the British showed that the Continetals were still a good fighting force. -
Battle of Yorktown
General Cornwallis of the British Army was trapped in the small town of Yorktown, Virginia next to the Atlantic Ocean. George Washington, with the help of the French navy and army, surrounded the British, laying a siege for 20 days. After a few days of fighting, the British surrendered. This ended all battles of the American Revolutionary War. -
Treaty of Paris
Peace Treaty between England and the United States ending the war. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson helped to negotiate the end. Paris, France was the place chosen for the negotiations.
