    Similar to Carpetbaggers, Scalawags are Southerners who supported Reconstruction, contrary to the popular opinion of the region, which was against Reconstruction.

    Similar to Scalawags, carpetbaggers were Northerners who traveled South after the Civil War to make profit off of Reconstruction.
  • 10% Plan

    Lincoln's 10% Plan or the Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction was a plan to readmit Southern states into the Union. Under the plan, any state with 10% of male voters supporting the Union would be readmitted.
  • Sharecropping

    In January of 1865, General Sherman ordered that some of the confiscated land from the South would be given to former slaves who needed land to farm. This practice is known as sharecropping and was done until around 1930.

    The Black Codes

    The Black Codes were laws passed to limit the rights of African Americans and former slaves. They are very similar to Jim Crow laws enacted after Reconstruction. Although the 13th amendment gave freedom to slaves, the Black Codes took away nearly every right except for freedom.
  • Freedman's Bureau

    The Freedman's Bureau or The Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands was a welfare program by the US government to establish former slaves as citizens.
  • Lincoln's Assassination

    While attending a play at Ford's Theatre, Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth shortly after the end of the Civil War. His vice-president, Andrew Johnson would take office after his assassination and carry on the Reconstruction process.
  • Andrew Johnson Takes Office

    Andrew Johnson was the vice-president to Abraham Lincoln and took office after Lincoln was assassinated. He led Reconstruction for many years and even faced an impeachment trial in which he was not guilty. He served a four year term and was not elected for a second term.
  • Reconstruction Begins

    After the Civil War ended, the Union wanted to readmit the Confederacy into their nation. In order to do this, the Union went through a process called Reconstruction.They negotiated ways of governing and giving rights to people. The end of the Civil War marks Reconstruction's beginning.
  • Civil Rights Act

    The Civil Rights Act was passed in 1866 after President Johnson vetoed the bill the year before. This act was intended to set former slaves free for good and give them the same rights as whites. The bill which was able to override Johnson's veto made blacks and whites equal.
  • Military Reconstruction Act

    This Act was passed in response to Andrew Johnson's attempt at Reconstruction and divided the South into 5 military districts. In order to achieve statehood, Southern states had to accept the 13th and 14th Amendments and Southern generals and military leaders were denied places in state office.
  • The 14th Amendment is Ratified

    The 14th Amendment was an act put in place to grant citizenship for those born in the US. With this Amendment, former slaves born in the US are now citizens.
  • The 15th Amendment is Ratified

    In 1870, the 15th Amendment was passed giving all men the right to vote, even those who were previously enslaved. this Amendment was built on previous laws that gave rights to blacks.

    The Panic of 1873 was an economic crisis that took place in 1873. The Panic is similar to the Great Depression that would happen years later. The Panic not only affected the US but Europe as well.
  • Compromise of 1877

    The Compromise of 1877 was an agreement intended to solve the dispute over who would win the 1876 election. Rutherford B. Hayes would take office from Andrew Johnson and troops would be removed from the South as a result.
