Parent Reading
Dr. Suess's books would be my go-to selection. We had a large bookshelf in the home that held at least 20 books in his collection. -
Play-Teacher
One of my biggest influences on reading was myself. When I started Kindergarten I already knew I wanted to be a teacher. I would "play teacher" with my siblings and even by myself and would read books to the "class." -
Scholastic Book Fair
I specifically remember the book fair during my second-grade year. I got the book "Because of Winn Dixie" and it was the first chapter book I got myself and read because I wanted to. Fun Fact: a golden retriever landed on our door-step and we named her Dixie. -
Deep, Dark, and Dangerous
This was the first thriller/horror book I have ever read. I read the book for fun but ended up doing a lot of book projects on it for school. -
First Library Card
In middle school, I would walk to the public library every day after class to wait to be picked up. I would always browse the teen section and I loved the non-fiction "How-To" books at this time. -
Wattpad
Freshman year of high school is when I began online reading. It was more convenient for me to read on my phone as it was easily assessable. I read mostly romance fiction books. -
Beowulf
Senior year of high-school English class, we read Beowulf. It is currently one of my favorite books to this day. The book had plot twists, evil characters, heroes, and was all around very entertaining. The professor let us read the entire class with only 20 minutes, in the beginning, to refresh and discuss the summary. -
Traveling
It is hard for me to go on a trip and not stop at a local book store. I just started yearly trips to Carlsbad, California and for 3 years in a row, I have visited the local book shops. I love to see the different selections they have compared to Las Vegas. -
Philosophy
Two semesters ago I took Philosophy and was changed by the books I had to read in the class. With only 16-weeks, we never read full books but we would read short inserts and be given a summary of what we read. I now enjoy books that challenge the way I think and live. -
Aesthetic
As cheesy as it sounds, my current motivation to read is to get up and visit the library. There is something so comforting in surrounding yourself in a quiet environment where others are educating themselves. Being surrounded by books and coffee makes me want to read.
