    1990 a civil war erupted in Somalia, causing me to flee and seek refuge in neighboring Ethiopia. I lost 4 of my sibling to that civil war.

    I grew up in a refugee camp and stayed there for ten years.
    I never had the opportunity to attend school and receive a formal education.

    My family and I stayed in Nairobi, Kenya, for at least four years, waiting for the immigration process. Eventually, my brother sponsored us to come to the United States.

    My thirst for knowledge persisted, and my love for learning grew stronger. I enrolled at the University of St. Thomas, where I was awarded a full-ride scholarship specifically designated for minority groups aiming to become educators and make a positive impact on their communities. This opportunity was for pursuing a Master of Education with a focus on Special Education.

    I completed my studies at the University of St. Thomas during the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, we were unable to have a traditional graduation ceremony and walk across the stage.

    Continuing to pursue knowledge and opportunities, I made the decision to press forward on my educational journey. My aim is to support and give back to my Somali community, contributing to society by teaching and working towards the common good. I dedicate my time to studying and immersing myself in reading books. I often find myself at Barnes and Noble, drawn by the inviting ambiance and the availability of coffee, creating a conducive environment for my studies.

    Meeting and learning from various educators who were also my classmates was a tremendous honor. Through this experience, we engaged in knowledge sharing and exchange. I had the opportunity to assist some of my peers with their projects, serving as a resource for them. Our collaboration was fruitful, and I gained valuable insights in return. Their recognition and appreciation for my contributions meant a lot to me.
