On February 6, 1840 the Treaty of Waitangi was signed. This made New Zealand a colony of Britain. -

In 1853 New Zealand was divided into six provinces. These provinces were Auckland, New Plymouth, Wellington, Nelson, Canterbury and Otago. -

In 1863 the first telegraph from Christchurch and Lyttleton was installed. Before this time it took about two months to commucate with other towns or cities. -
Women Voting
New Zealand becomes the first country to allow women to vote. 109,461 women enrolled to vote in the election, this was 84% of the women in New Zealand. -
New Zealand Native reaches the top of Mount Everest
Edmund Hillary and Nepalese Tenzing were the first people to climb Mount Everest. It took the pair 7 weeks to go up the mountain. Coming down the mountain only took 3 days. -
New Zealand suspends contact with Israel.
Two Israelis were put in jail for trying to get passports illegally. They were spies for the Mossad agency.
