My Literacy Journey

  • Learning English

    Learning English
Growing up in a Spanish household, I was enrolled in Spanish classes until the 3rd grade. Classes in El Paso, Tx were split into two groups, Spanish and English classes. My Mother decided it would be best for me to learn English. I remember when I was being registered the person gathering my information asked me what a ball was in Spanish. I didn't know the answer, so I cried. I didn't want to take English classes.
  • Love for reading

    Love for reading
By the end of my 3rd grade year I was reading at a higher level than other students in class. In class we were split into groups, one group had the slower learners where the teacher worked with this students, another with good readers who worked with the teachers assistant, and the last group advanced readers where the students worked with each other. I started off with the slower learner group and was moved to the advanced group where I was taught how to read by 2 boys.
  • Reading Escape

    Reading Escape
My parents spit up and got back together my 5th grade year. That year I attended 3 different school. I kept to myself and focused on my school work. At home or where we were staying to escape the ruckus in my life I would read. Reading helped me forget all the ugly I had seen. It helped me escape into the world of the books I was reading.
  • Honor Roll Student

    Honor Roll Student
In 6th grade I continued to enjoy reading and writing. I kept being an A/B Honor Roll student and was placed in the National Junior Honor Society. I loved school and did really well all my middle school years. I was also a part of student council.
  • Bye El Paso

    Bye El Paso
The Summer I was going to start High School my parents slip up again. This time for real. We moved to South Beloit, IL. To keep in contact with my friends and family I would write letters. I loved to get mail and response to my loved ones
  • Slow Down

    Slow Down
I left middle school as a good student with good grades. My high school classes felt like I was being re-taught things I had already learned in Tx. Not a lot of students were very bright and I felt like I had to dumb myself down to fit in with this new group of people. I stopped working hard in school and started to hang out with the bad crowd.
  • Cup Pac Packaging

I barely graduated high school, I did just enough to get by. I even had to re-take some classed due to failing them.I decided college was not for me and got my first factory job packing packets of lemonade and cheese. I hated my repetitive and tiring job. I would be on my feet 8-10 hours a day packing all day. After a few months I decided to go to college. I only went for a semester and didn't return due to getting a supervisor position at another company.
  • Back to BTC

I was a supervisor at a plastic packing company for 4 years. Learning everything at my job left me bored and I decided I wanted to change my career path. I took a $3 cut and became a recruiter for a staffing agency. My co-worker now friend Tasha and I decided to take HR classes together. We wanted to move up in our company.
  • School Suspension

This year I had a lot of family and work issues that caused me to fail classes and get suspended from school. My brother was in jail and work was getting so bad, I started to drink way too much. I was heart broken when I got suspended, but decided again that school was not for me. Work was so bad I got fired from my recruiting job of 4 years.
  • Back to BTC Again

    Back to BTC Again
I got a job as an office manager in a staffing agency. I then decided that school IS for me. I have been spending so much money on school to have nothing to show for it. I wrote my appeal letter and was accepted to return to school . I know plan to do my best and stay focused to get my degree in Human Resource. This degree will help me in my current job and it will help me continue to advance in this company.
