Dred Scott Decision
Chief Justice Roger B. Taney delivered the Supreme Court's decision against Dred Scott. Scott had been emancipated as a result of having lived with his master in the free state of Illinois and in federal territory where slavery was forbidden. The decision declared that Congress had no power to prohibit slavery in the federal territories, -
Lincoln Assassination
Abraham Lincoln and his wife, Mary, attended the performance of "Our American Cousin" at the Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C. five days after the end of the American Civil War. John Wilkes Booth who was a famous actor and supported the Confederates snuck into the President's box and shot the president in the back of the head. -
McCarthy Hearings
Between April 22 and June 17 a series of hearings were held by the United States Senate's Subcommittee on Investigations were held concerning conflicting accusations between the United States Army and Senator Joseph McCarthy. -
Brown v. BOE
It overturned the Plessy v Ferguson decision of 1896, which had allowed states legalize segregation within schools. The ruling essentially led the way for the civil rights movement and essentially integration across the United States. -
Gideon v. Wainwright
Gideon was charged with a felony in Florida state court.Gideon was charged in a Florida state court with breaking and entering into a poolroom with the intent to commit a misdemeanor. Such an offense was a felony under Florida law. The jury returned a guilty verdict and Gideon was sentenced to serve five years in state prison. -

Voting Rights Act

Although, the 15th Amendment in the Constitiution gave everyone the right to vote in 1870 the Southern States required literacy tests and polling taxes to vote. The Voting Rights Act didn'd allow the States to give literacy tests and made polling taxes illegal for state and local elections. -
"Tear Down this Wall"
Ronald Reagan gave a speech at the Brandenburg Gate near the Berlin Wall. In his speech he challenged the Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev to tear down the Berlin Wall as an emblem of Gorbachev's desire to increase freedom in the Eastern Bloc. Over two years later the wall was finally taken down. -
Clinton Impeachment
Bill Clinton was impeached by the House of Representitives on December 19, 1998 on the charges of perjury and obstructio of justice. However the Senate was 17 votes short of removing Clinton from office. Clinton was the second President to be impeached, the first being Andrew Johnson. -
9/11
On November 11th, 2001 there were a series of suicide attacks by al-Qaeda on New York and Washington D.C. which highly impacted America. Two hijacked planes hit the North and South World Trade Center towers and a third hit the Pentagon.
