After being accepted into college at Sorbonne and being enrolled in physics she met her future husband Pierre Curie. Another brilliant mind of which she immediately fell for. In 1895, they were married and a scientific partnership was born. After being married they conducted years of research dedicated to discovering more about radiation. (Hume, pg.222/223) -
Announced Their Discovery of Polonium and Radium
In the year of 1898, they announced the discovery of two new elements of which they had been researching. On July 18 they announced their discovery of Polonium named after Marie's homeland. And on December 26th of the same year, they announced their discovery of a second radioactive element called Radium. Due to the discovery of these two elements they were able to learn many things including that radium causes tumors when directly exposed. (revolve.com Marie Curie) -
Curies were Awarded with the Davy Medal
In 1903, as an award for their hard work and their incredible discoveries of radioactive elements the Curie's were awarded the Davy medal in London. The Davy Medal is an award given by the Royal Society of London for important discoveries in chemistry. ( Davy Medal, www.smarter.com) An extremely high honor for the Curies. (Byers, pg.339) -
Won First Nobel Prize
Also in 1903, the Curie's win their first Nobel Prize. Marie Curie is the first women ever to win such a prize. They won because of their amazing discoveries in radioactive studies and understanding. They won the Nobel Prize in Physics a great accomplishment for the couple. (Marie Curie, www.nobelprize.org) -
Marie's Husband is Killed
On April 19, 1906, Pierre Curie was run over by a carriage and killed. This was an immaculate loss to Marie for she had just lost not only her partner in discovery and scientific success, but she also lost the love of her life. When he died she mourned but only for a short time because she still had to take care of two daughters and her career in science.(Marie Curie, www.nobelprize.org) -
Won Her Second Nobel Prize
In 1911, Marie won her second Nobel Prize in chemistry. Marie was the first person to win two Nobel Prizes. This Nobel Prize in chemistry was awarded to Marie for her work in radioactivity. Because of Marie's studies people know more than they ever have on radiation and radioactive elements. (Marie Curie, www.nobelprize.org) -
Little Curies
LIttle Curies are the x-ray machine of Marie's time. She equipped a car with a portable x-ray machine that was used to help save lives of soldiers during World War I. This machine they had discovered can guide surgeons through difficult surgeries. Many grateful surgeons and survivors nic-named this machine Little Curies after the brilliant Maire Curie.
