Early Life
At the age of 4, Kateri Tekakwitha contracted small pox, luckily surviving the outbreak. Her family, was not so lucky and passed away. She was then raised by her uncle. The small pox left scars on her face which posed as a sign of humility. No exact date of small pox contraction found. -
Teenage Years
Kateri Tekakwitha was never interested in marriage. Her adopted parents proposed a suitor to her, but she declined. She was a hard worker and was then burdened with more work as a punishment for her unusual attitude. They soon accepted her wishes. Soon after at age 19, she converted to Catholicism, vowing to only marry Jesus Christ. This did not blow over well in her community and she was forced to relocate to a Christian Native community south of Montreal. No exact date of conversion found. -
