US Tried to Buy Land
In President Polk's Innaugural speach he speaks about hpw he intends on expanding America. He tells Commissioner Slidell to try to buy California for 25 Million. He also tells him to try to to make a deal with Mexico. -
Texas Admitted to the Union
President John Tyler in fear of not being re-elected tried to get Texas to join the Union, as it would benefit Americans and the re-election of President Tyler. Eventually Congress approved his goal, and he signed an offer to Texas for annexation on March 1st. Texas later accepted America's offer. -
US Declares War
After telling America that they were on the brink of war, President Polk recieves General Taylor's letter that writes about how we should declare war on Mexico. He then marches in to the Matamoros. -
Battle of Palo Alto
General Taylor led 3,000 troops to the Rio Grande and established a fort. General Arista led 4,00 troops to Matamoros. General Taylor then tried to move 2,200 men to point Isabel. General Arista tried to intercept his move. They fought each other for 3 hours in Palo Alto. The Americans eventually won. -
US Troops Stationed at Disputed Border
President Polk orders General Zachary Taylor and Commodore David Conner to organize an army in Corpus Christi, along the border of Mexico -
Mexico City Surrenders
After General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna’s defensive line collapsed after battling with American forces, General Winfield Scott ordered his men to take over Mexico City. They fought for a day and then Pillow launched his attack at 8 am. The Mexican's could no longer hold off the Americans and surrendered. -
Treaty of Guadelupe Hidalgo
It required Mexico to cede 55 percent of it's territory. Now a day Arizona, California, New Mexico, parts of Colorado, Nevada and Utah in exchange for 15 million dollars.
