Mexican-American War
The US felt El Rio Grande should be where the border was set, but since Mexico did not agree, the US prepared for war. The war lasted until 1848, until the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed -
Independant Treasury System of 1846
Different presidents had tried to establish a financial system with no luck. Andrew Jacksondestroyed the national bank. In 1840, Van Buren established t he Independent Treasury System, but in 1941 Congress terminated the ITS. In 1846, Polk and the Democrats succeeded in reestablishing the ITS, and it remained the basis of American fiscal policy until it was replaced by the Federal Reserve System in 1913 -
Fifty-Four Forty or Fight!
The Oregon Treaty between the US and the UK signed in 2846. Before that, Oregon was owned by both countries divided between 42 North and 54 40' North.. After 10 years, the US wanted to call off this join ownership. "Fifty-Four Forty of Fight" became a popular saying. Finally, both countries made a deal and set the border at the 49th parallel. -
End of Mexican War
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed, ending the war. This meant that the U.S. gained California and Nevada. Consequently, the U.S. payed Mexico $15 million for the territory. -
