The Colored Farmers National Alliance was created
The Colored Farmers National Alliance was created in Texas where they elected J.J. Shuffer as their first president. This group was formed by a group of black farmers because the Farmers Alliance didn't allow black members. This group encouraged the members to become independent by owning their own land and eliminating debts. -
Tillman Hall was built
Tillman Hall was created in honor of South Carolina's Governor, Ben Tillman. Ben Tillman supported Clemson because the University was an agricultural college and wanted to teach the students better crop management. -
Populist movement
The populist movement was a revolt by the southern farmers for the democratic and republican parties ignoring their interests. During the populist movement two groups were formed National Farmers' Alliance and the Colored Farmers' Alliance. -
1893 hurricane and phosphate found in florida
Phosphate was discovered in Charleston where they used it as a fertilizer to help the crops grow down south. So on August 27th, 1893 when the hurricane hit the Charleston area many mining industries were destroyed. Also when they discovered that there was phosphate in Florida, South Carolina lost many of its profits made from phosphate.
