Commodore that was sent to Japan to open trade relations between the US and Japan. President Millard Fillmore sent Matthew C. Perry to open trade relations with Japan. Perry thought that Japan isolation policy would change if they accepted their trade relations with the US. -
Accepting negotiations
Perry returned to Japan with seven ships and 1,600 men. Several months later, the Treaty of Kanagawa was concluded, permitting US to resupply at Japan. -
Return of the Hero
Perry returned as a hero and was awarded $20,000 and a promotion to rear admiral. -
Matthew C. Perry's death
Wrote his memoirs about his trips to Japan, died of rheumatism of the heart due to alcohol and complications of the gout. Died in New York City
