President Franklin D. Roosevelt
FDR became our 32nd President. He was the first President to take office with a disability. -
First Center for Independent Living
(Could not find actual open date) In 1972, the first center for indepdent living was opened in Berkeley, California. This center focuses on people with disabilities becoming independent. -
Education for All Handicapped Children Act
(Public Law 94-142) This law was put into place to protect and serve all people with disabilities. -
IDEA
(Could not find actual date) In 1990, the individuals with Disabilities Education Act was put in place to make sure that every student is given a free appropriate public education (FAPE). -
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
This act stated that all people with disabilities should be treated with "equality, independence, and freedom." (George Bush) -
IDEA1997
In 1997, IDEA made some changes. These changes were made to improve the quality of instruction and accommodations made for special education students. -
No Child Left Behind
In 2002, No Child Left Behind was signed to hold students to high standards and also require students with disabilities to count when looking at assessments.
