Justin Smith Morrill Act
Also known as the Land Grant College, the Morrill Act was a push for higher education. The grant was to make sure that higher education was available for all education classes including agriculture, home economics, mechanical arts, and other interests. -

Switch from human testing to rat testing
Researcher, E.V. McCollum, began using rats instead of humans. The switch was supposed to be to livestock, but he discovered rats were a better testing subject and used it to see the effects of foods such as butter and the effect of low vitamin intake. -
Smith Lever Act
This law established a Cooperative Extension Service between the Land Grant Universities and the USDA in order to inform the schools about up to date events, laws, and research that has been performed. -
Smith Hughes Act
This act granted federal aid to the states for the purpose of promoting pre-collegiate vocational education in agricultural and industrial trades and in home economics. -
Dietitians Enter Hospitals
After WWI, Dietitians were brought into the hospitals and put on staff to help monitor and improve the health of the war veterans. This began the initiative to involve dietitians in the health care system. -
First Vitamin Pills marketed
In the 1930's the first vitamin pills were advertised, which began the switch to new science-based health products. -
Vocational Education Act of 1963
Put into place by John F. Kennedy, the Vocational Education Act of 1963 reduced federal control and and brought in work-study programs. -
Vocational Equity Act of 1963
This Act made federal funded education develop and assemble programs that will eliminate gender bias, discrimination, and stereotyping. -
Vocational Education Amendment of 1968
This Act extended education services to all persons with any handicap that hold them back from succeeding in regular vocational education programs. Not only is education available because of this act, but quality was a factor incorporated in this act as well. -
Creation of the WIC Program
This intervention program was created to improve the health and nutrition of women, infants, and children. This program is funded by the USDA. -
The Rehabilitation Act of 1973
This Act prohibits discrimination because of disability in federal agency, assisted, and employed programs and workplaces. -
The First FDA Nutrition Label
If companies were putting out products that made any type of nutrition claim, or if anything was added, the product needed a food label. The label did not have to include sodium, saturated fatty acids, or polyunsaturated acids. -
Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act
This Act was created to increase focus on improving the academic achievement of career and technical education students. It was also created to strengthen the connection between secondary and postsecondary education. -
Hunger-Free Kids Act
This Act allows the USDA to make changes to school lunches. This act was in hopes to change the obesity levels in children throughout the US, initiated by Michelle Obama. -
Creation of MyPlate
This icon switch to a plate rather than a pyramid was created to emphasize the general idea that eating healthy is the best way to go. This seemed to be better because it grabbed peoples attention because they could think of meal time as they look at the plate.
