The Dutch

Mar 13, 1606

In 1606, the Dutch were the first Europeans to sail to Australia. This was a major accomplishment for the Dutch.

Captain James Cook

Mar 13, 1770

In 1770, Captain James Cook sailed around Australia. He named the land South Wales.

When it became offical

Mar 13, 1788

During the years of 1788 ans 1832, New South Wales offically became a penal { a prison }. The only poeople in it { allowed} were the guards and their families, and the convicts.

Port Arthur, Tasmania

Mar 13, 1833

During the years of 1833-the 1850's Port Arthur was the destination for the worst criminals. Port Arthur was so bad that people { criminals } would kill themselves so that they wouldn't have to go to Port Arthur.

Separation!

Mar 13, 1900

During the 1900's, separation became an offical government { rule } policy. This lasted for many decades. It was very sad for the Aborigines because they couldn't { weren't allowed } to teach their children about their religion, background, culture,etc. Can you imagine that?

Commonwealth of Australia

Jan 1, 1901

On January 1, 1901 the Commonwealth of Australia was established. This was a big deal for Australia, Commonwealth was extremely important to them.

White Australia

Mar 13, 1901

White Australia was when you could only enter Australia unless you were white { Caucasian}. This was very unfair, but it is what Australia was at a time...It didn't last very long but it still happened. It was cruel to not let someone come into a country just because of their race. This put several limits on people who were not Caucasian.

Aborigines

Mar 13, 1960

In the 1960's, policies were changed to give the Aborigines a chance for equal rights. This let them hold a seat in parliament,have their own schools in which they are able to teach their children about their culture, and many more. This " opened" many "windows" for Australia.

Help the Aborigines!!!

Mar 13, 1967

In 1967, Australia's federal government passed a legislation to help the Aborigines. The Aborigines were excited and in need of this help. The Aborigines thought that they had been treated extremely poorly and that it was unfair { before }. When this legislation passed it was a really big deal.

Australia Act

Mar 13, 1986

The Australia Act occured in 1986. This was when all of the legal ties { with the British Empire} were severed.
