The first movie with a narrative was in 1903. Edwin porter created it and was Thomas Edison's employee. The movie was 12 minuets long and 14 scenes total. -
Vaudeville
Small theaters that showed short skits, comedy routines, and song and dance numbers. They showed short films between sets to get more popular. Vaudeville became the Nickelodeons. -
Nickelodeons
Nickelodeons were averaging 26 million viewers a week by 1910. The potential was there for making money. To make the most of their profits was to create a monopoly. -
Independent Studios
They escaped the MPPC's grasp by going to California. This put a lot of distance between them. Even if the goons did get there they could make a quick escape to Mexico. -
Charlie Chapln
He was the comedy genius of silent film era. He started off making $105 a week. By 1917 he was making a million a year. They would use his films to convey a message. -
Films with sound
They called films with sound talkies. They thought the audience would not accept it and it would fail. By 1937 silent films were ceased to production. -
Color in film
Some short films experimenting with color in 1912. But it wasn't until late 1930s there used in films. The first ones were Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind in 1939. -
Blockbuster Era
The success of Jaws in 1975 is when the era began. Big tentpole films began showing in the summer to box office success. In the 80s CGI was incorporated into films. -
Film to Digital
In the 2000s the transition began. By the 2010s digital was the new normal and film was being used sparingly. Directors like JJ Adams kept film alive.
