Events leading up to the Civil War

  • English Settlers Buy Endentured Servants

    English Settlers Buy Endentured Servants
    English settlers from Virginia bought servants. They were not sold as slaves, but eventually they were treated and bought as lifelong slaves.
  • States were begining to legalize slavery

    States were begining to legalize slavery
    Massechusits Bay Colony legalizes slavery in 1641. After that, more states started to legalize slavery. In 1660 Virginia legalized slavery.
  • John Casor is the first to be judicially confirmed as a slave

    John Casor was the first slave to be judicially confirmed and legal.
  • Slaves are punished for rebelling

    Slaves are punished for rebelling
    Slaves started to rebell. While some slaves were born into slavery, and knew no better, others wanted nothing more than their freedom. They would destroy property and fight against their owners. They would be severly punished, but rarly killed, because that would just be waisting the slave owners money.
  • Run away slaves get freedom in St. Augistine

    Run away slaves get freedom in St. Augistine
    The spanish were not for slavery. They issued a proclamation stating that any slaves that made it to St. Augustine Flordia.
  • Quakers start the first Anti-slave society

    Quakers start the first Anti-slave society
    The Quakers Started a society against slavery. They didn't believe in slavery. The society was called "The Pensylvania society for the abolition of slavery."
  • States began to abolish slavery

    In 1777 Verginia, not even a state yet, was the first to abolish slavery. Pensylvania aboloshed slavery in 1780.
  • Cotton Gin

    Cotton Gin
    Eli Whitney invented a simple machine that influenced the United states big time. Plantation owners were able to plant more cotton when this was invented. It was easily seperated from the seeds.
  • Underground Railroad

    the underground railroad stretched out for years andyears. It really started in the early 1800's though. The Underground Railroad was neither underground or a railroad. It was a series of people who would hide run away slaves. the people would hide the slaves for a day or so, then the slaves would run to the next house, untill they were to a free state.
  • The Mexican War

    This was was against Mexico and the United states. They were fighting for land. When the Americans won, they also won land. America blocked out adding the Texan republic to the US for years because they were afraid that it would add many new slave states to the US. This caused conflict.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott was a slave who was a slave. He and his owner moved to a free state, when his owner died. He thought he should be freed. He took it to the supreme court, and they said anyone with African American blood can not be free.
  • Abraham Lincoln became president

    Abraham Lincoln became president
    Abraham Lincoln was elected president 1860. He disliked slavery. He assumed office on March 4 1861.
  • The Civil War started

    The American civil War Began in North Carolina. The war lasted until 1865, when slaves were set free.
