Clara Barton was born in Oxford,Massachusetts on December 25,1821.She was born to Captain Stephen and Sarah Barton.Clara was the youngest of 5 kids. -
First Accident
Clara's first patient her brother David .This played a big role on how she first found out she loved helping people.Her brother got hurt and at the age of 11 Clara stayed home with him and nursed him.Clara stayed home for two year of school nursing David back to heath. -
School
Clara was first a teacher and found many free schools in New Jersey.Many people were very impressed by Clara's Teaching skill.Most teacher back there were men and got paid more then she did and even took her job.Clara job went to a man and she left teaching in 1854.After this Clara joined the civil right movement. -
Her New Job
She became a clerk in the Patent Office, Washington, D.C., but resigned at the start of the American Civil War to work as a volunteer.She distubred supplies to wounded soilders.She also nursed them back to health.Because of her amazing work she got the name of "Angel of the Battlefield". -
6th Massachusetts Regiment
The 6th Massachussetts Regiment came to Washington after the Baltimore riots,Clara set up a relief program for soliders.Then after hearing that many suffered from lack of medical supplys in The Battle of Bull Run Clara collected and donated medic supplys.This Clara bought with her own money or donations she distribute it to hurt soliders and saved many people live cause of it. -
Running hospitals
Clara impressed many Union leader with her scientific approach to nursing.She came to running Union Hospitals in Virginia and North Carolina.Everyday Clara risked her life taking care of wounded soliders. -
After the War
After the war in 1865, Clara switch and worked for the War Department.Here she help reunited solider with there family or find missing soliders.During this period she also became a lecturer where she talk about her war experiences in front of crowds. -
Red Cross
During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–'71 Clara worked with the Red Cross.This was her first time working with the Red Cross and was in Europe.This is what ecourage her to make the American Red Cross. -
American Red Cross
After returning home Clara wanted to make a branch of the Red Cross in the U.S.Then in 1881 Clara Barton accomplished the first American Red Cross.She saved million of live by this. -
Resign
Clara resigned from the American Red Cross in 1904.After this she contuined to give speech to crowd of people.Many people listen as she would give speech about her time as a nurse in the civil war and in the Red Cross helping people. -
Book
Clara after her resign decided to wrote a book.This book was published in 1907 the title was "The Story of My Childhood".As you can guess this book was about Clara's upbringing. -
Death
Clara Baton died on April 12,1912.Clara died at her home in Glen Echo,Maryland of Tuberculosis.The "Angel of the Battlefield" is buried in Oxford, Massachusetts at her family cemetery.Her house she now a historical site you can visit.
