A slave rebellion precursor to Harpers Ferry. Began the trend of slave rebellions. Killed 55-65 people. -
Gag rule of 1836
The house passed a resolution to automatically table all resolutions relating to slavery. This bottled up anger and legislation to work towards a solution. Helped cause the political explosion leading to the civil war. -
Compromise of 1850
A series of five bills meant to diffuse tensions between the slave owning states. Post Mexican-American war. It didn't work very well because people are rascist. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
A novel published in 1852 by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It was anti slavery. This invigorated the abolitionists and helped increase tensions toward the war. -
Harpers ferry raid
This was a raid led by John Brown of a federal armory. It started a slave revolt and led to much public anger in the south. It was called the dress rehearsal for the civil war. -
Election of 1860
Lincoln gets elected. The south gets angry. The confederacy secedes.
