Fort Sumter
This was the start of the civil war. The confederates attacked because the union had taken over Fort Sumter. At 4:30 AM the confederates raided the base. The confederates won this battle. Not 1 soldier died in the whole battle. -
Battle of Antietam
This is considered to be the bloodiest day in U.S history. By night 26,000 men are dead or wounded. The battle started when the Union charged the confederates while they were posterizing.The union won. The union´s victory caused Abraham Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. -
The Emancipation Proclamation
This document was issued five days after the battle of Antietam. This stated that of 1/1/1863 all slaves will be freed in the confederate slave states. This did not apply to any slave states that have stayed in the union. -
Battle of Gettysburg
¨The Turning Point of the War¨. By the spring of 1863 the Confederates beat the Union in several battles. The 2 sides met in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania unexpectedly. They fought for 3 days, There was no specific winner. 51,000 soldiers were killed, that is the bloodiest battle ever fought in North America. This battle and Vicksburg made the war in favor of the Union. More than 1/3 of General Lee´s army was dead, wounded, or missing completely. -
Battle of Vicksburg
The last Confederate stronghold next to the Mississippi river surrendered to the Union after a whole 6 weeks of siege. After they surrendered the Confederates were separated from their western allies because the Union was now in control of the Mississippi River. -
Gettysburg Adress.
This speech is spoken by the words of Abraham Lincoln at the Dedication of Soldiers National Cemetery. This cemetery was specially made for Union soldiers that died in the battle of Gettysburg. This speech gave hope to the people to keep fighting for unity of the states and the end of slavery. And that all of these reasons are worth fighting for. -
Appomattox Courthouse (South surrenders)
On 11/8/1864 the voters re-elected Abraham Lincoln. On March 1865 the Union was closing in on the Confederates at Petersburg. After the Union attacked Confederate soldiers were famished. on April 2nd of 1865 General Lee took his army west hoping to find food and gather more Confederate troops. Because they left Petersburg fell, another result is that one day later the Confederates capital, Richmond also fell. The war was over. At the Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia on 4/9/1865 Lee surrendered. -
Conclusion to the War
All the remaining Confederates surrendered. The nation is now reunited and The Civil War is finally over. About 620,000 Americans on both sides died in the war. Diseases killed twice as many of the soldiers lost in the battles. About 50,000 soldiers on both sides came home with missing limbs. On 1/31/1865 the 13th amendment abolishing slavery was passed by congress and ratified. Slavery is now abolished once and for all.
