  • First branded product

In 1661 Dentifrice Tooth Gel was branded and became the first branded product. This is a big deal because branding gives credit to the company who made the product and also distinguishes one company from another making it easier to compare products.

    The Evolution of Advertising

The History of Advertising goes back to B.C but my timeline starts where it really starts to evolve. "When business is good it pays to advertise; when business is bad you've got to advertise."

  • First newspaper ad

In 1704, a news ad for Oyster Bay; Long Island Estate appeared in the Boston News-Letter. This was the first advertisement to appear in a newspaper.
  • First newspaper to feature pages of advertisements

In 1729, Ben Franklin (Yes, Ben Franklin.) started publishing the Pennsylvania Gazette which contained pages filled with advertisements for many different products and places. Franklin is more of a genius than even we give him credit for!
  • First advertising agency

Volney Palmer (Try saying that ten times fast!) established the first advertising agency in Philidalphia 1843. An advertising agency is an agency on which a business would call to help sort out how to best publicize their product or company.
  • First electric light sign

It might not sound like much, but the first electric light in Times Square made a huge difference in the world of advertising. Lit in 1882, this sign inspired people worldwide to use this light-up sign to attract the eyes of people walking down the street. It certainly worked, our eyes are drawn to the lights where we can't help but see signs with the names of resteraunts, theatres, stores, and much more.

  • Birth of video advertising

    Birth of video advertising
A video advertisement is a TV commercial put on the internet that usually plays before a video or game. Youtube metaphorically gave birth to this concept when it launched in 2006.
  • Social-based advertising

    Social-based advertising
Facebook launched in 2007 and we witnessed another metaphorical birth-the birth of social-based advertising. Social-based advertising lets companies see what people like by tracking their social interactions. In other words, their invading our privacy!
  • Nowadays

Right now, online advertising is quite the rage and there are pop-up ads everywhere, but TV commercials are also on the rise. Though they techniclly can't rise any higher. Companies are trying to weave their way through the loopholes of advertising laws and Facebook and Twitter are becoming another type of advertising. Who knows what will happen next?
  • The future

In the future, companies will probably find some loophole in the law that will allow them to track the "business victim's" social interactions, (like Facebook), purchases, and even personalities (like Bill Gates' mansion which is a completely different story alogether) to find out what they like.
