The Assassination
On June 28th Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary and his wife, Sophie, were both assassinated by Gavrilo Princip. Since Princip was a Serbian Nationalist, his act caused Austria-Hungary to give an ultimatum to Serbia. This event was one of the first factors that lead to Wold War I. -
Nationalism
Serbia was against Austrian domination. So they came up with a plan in which a nationalist killed Archduke Ferdinand and his wife. -
The Blank Check
When Austria-Hungary was at war with Serbia, Kaiser Wilhelm II gave a blank check to Austria-Hungary. This meant that Germany would support everything that Austria-Hungary did to stop Serbia. -
Militarism
Five days after the ultimatum Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia for assassinating Archduke Franz Ferdinand. They felt the need to defend their country by using their Military and allied forces. -

Allied Powers
Since Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, Germany and Italy allied with Austria-Hungary to form the Triple Alliance. The Triple Alliance fought against the Triple Entente, which consisted of Britain, France, and Russia. -
WWI Begins
When the war started Germany declared war on France. When they attacked France they invaded Belgium who was neutral in the war. This caused Britain to join the war since Germany did not stop invading Belgium to get to France. -
Lusitania
The British ocean liner Lusitania was torpedoed by a German U-boat, without any warning. 1,198 people died, only leaving 761 survivors. This made many people go against Germany. But Germany defended itself by saying that they issued warnings that they would sink any boats that were in the war zone. -
Zimmerman Telegram
The Zimmerman Telegram was a secret message sent from Germany to Mexico. In the message Germany proposed a military alliance. They wanted to have Mexico on their side just in case the United States happened to enter the war against them. -
Germany's resumption of unrestricted submarine warfare
After the sinking of Lusitania Germany suspended the policy of unrestricted submarine warfare because of the pressure from the United States and other neutral countries. But because of their commitment to win the war they resumed the unrestricted submarine warfare even will all these people against them. -
The United Sates Joins WWI
After Germany continued the unrestricted warfare and sent the Zimmerman Telegram to Mexico, the president of The United Stated, Woodrow Wilson, decided to declare war on Germany. When the united states joined the war with their fresh armies, they gave the allies an advantage over the central powers. -

Effects of WWI
During World War I there was 40 million casualties and 20 million deaths. From the Austrian-Hungary Empire new nations such as Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia were formed. The end of the war also brought forth national bankruptcy and many deaths that didn't bring any benefits. -
Hitler
Hitler joined a small German Workers’ Party which was all about German nationalism and over time he became the leader and renamed it Nazi. Then President Paul von Hindenburg appointed Hitler as Chancellor. -
Treaty of Versailles
The war ended with the Treaty of Versailles. This treaty made Germany take all the blame for the war. Germany had to give up a lot of it's land, demilitarize and pay for the war repair. This made Germans really angry because it was unfair. -
Dawes Plan and Young Plan
During the war Germany had a new government called the Weimar Republic and it made the people in Germany believe they were winning the war. But when they lost they war Germany was so weak that they had to sign the Treaty of Versailles. The Dawes Plan was created by the Dawes Committee. They tries to solve Germany's problem of paying all the WWI reparations. The Young Plan was created by a new committee lead by American Owen D. Young. They meet to revise the Dawes Plan. -

In 1929 there was a stock market crash and their prices continued to drop causing the United States to enter the Great Depression. -
