How did the war start
On June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were both assasinated while on a visit to Serbia. War was declared between Serbia and Austria, because a Serb killed them. Austria had signed a treaty, along with Germany and Italy (called the Triple Alliance), saying that if one of them went to war against another country, the rest of them would fight too. -
Machines were made!
With the techniques learned in the industrial Revolution, machines designed for war were mass-prrodused. Tanks, heavy artillery, machine guns, and airplanes helped to make the war more violent than before. This greatly increased the number of soldiers killed in the war. -
Germany invades France and Russia invades Germany
After war was declared by each country, they began moving their armies into positon. These shifting armies moved slowly over the land leaving total destruction in their path. -
United States declares war on Germany

World War I Ended
The fighting ended with a cease fire. Which went into effect on November 11, 1918. It required the German forces to evacuate their positions and return to Germany. They had to leave their heavy weapons behind. After that, a formal peace treaty was made by the winners at Versailles, France, Germany and Austria were given the choice of accepting it or continuing the war. They decided to stop the war. -
The Treaty of Versailles
The Treaty of Versailles is signed ending World War 1. The treaty was one of the peace treaties at the end of World War I. It ended the war between Germany and the Allied Powers. It was signed exactly five years after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. The other Central Powers on the German side of World War I were dealt with in separate treaties.
