    The Renaissance

    The Renaissance was a period of growth and rebirth of culture. There were many innovations, art, and learning that emerged during the Renaissance.

    The Columbian Exchange

    The Columbian Exchange was the trading of plant and animal species between the western and eastern hemispheres. Bacteria and viruses would spread to the other hemisphere when these exchanges occurred.

    Christopher Columbus and His Voyage

    In 1492, Christopher Columbus set out on his voyage that was allowed by Queen Isabella of Spain. Columbus was trying to get to Asia and landed at the Bahamas which is how he "discovered the new world."

    Indulgences

    Indulgences were sold to sinners to absolve their sins and allow them into Heaven. Indulgences were issued by the Catholic Church which led to the Protestant Reformation.

    Lutheranism

    Lutheranism was the religion that Martin Luther founded after he was banned from the Catholic Church for disagreeing with the pope in 1517.

    Calvinism

    Calvinism, founded by Jean Calvin, was a religion that was different from Lutheranism in many ways. Some differences between the two religions was the way to salvation, everyday life, ect.

    The Jesuits

    The Jesuits was a religious order that was founded by Ignatius of Loyola. The purpose of the Jesuits was to fight Protestantism and defend the pope and the Catholic Church.

    The English Reformation

    The English Reformation was when the Church of England broke away from the pope and the Catholic Church. It started because King Henry VIII wanted a divorce but many events led to the eventual breakaway.

    Religious Wars

    Europe was split up by religion and Protestantism was now permanent. There were peace treaties that were established that determined the acceptable religions that could be practiced in Europe.
  • The Thirty Years' War

    The Thirty Years' War was a religious conflict in Europe where there was a lot of suffering and violence. The purpose of the war was to establish religious freedom.
