    Events that occured in relation to the Cold War during the years that it had been active.
  • The Truman Doctrine is created.

    The Truman Doctrine was created as a warning that the United States would provide asistance (military, political and economic) to democratic nations, altering the U.S. foreign policy. The doctrine was also a commitment to preserve the political integrity of democratic nations. This caused a widespread sense of conflict between Americans and Soviets.   • Cease of compliance between East and West Berlin.

    Joseph Stalin closed highway routes that allowed western allies to transfer supplies into West Berlin,in hopes to force these Western countries to agree to his terms. The United States began to air drop supplies to West Berlin in retaliation to the cirsumstance. This was an event foreshadowing the construction of the Berlin Wall.   • Formation of the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization.)

    NATO was a military alliance. The organization behaved on the pretense that if a member of the treaty was attacked, every membered country was to be seen as attacked and allowed to retaliate against the attacker.   • The creation of the Warsaw Pact.

    The Warsaw Pact was the Soviet Union's retaliation to the formation of NATO. The pact contained the Soviet Union and a large portion of Europe. These separations were a clear sign of the growing mistrust between the United States and the Soviet Union. Slide 7: Europe's "Iron Curtian"

  • 1960 election between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon.

    The political battle between Kennedy and Nixon that ended in the election of John F. Kennedy as president was symbolic of where America was headed as the decade began. Nixon and Kennedy were friends early in their political career. Slide 13: Election of 1960

  • The Bay of Pigs Invasion to overthrow Fidel Castro.

    The CIA attempted to invade Cuba to overthrow the government of Fidel Castro. The fail of the Bay of Pigs Invasion share Cuba's intent on socialism and strengthening their bonds with the Soviet Union. Slide 14: Bay of Pigs (Apr '61)

  • Creation of the Berlin Wall begins.

    The Berlin Wall was built to keep Berlin citizens within certain territory and to separate East and West Berlin. The wall was gradually strengthened over the years. Seen as a "real condemnation of communism" that a wall had to be built to keep citizens in as opposed to keep enemies out. Slide 6: Berlin Blokade/Airlift

  • The Soviet Invasion of Czechoslovakia

    Troops of the Warsaw Pact invaded Czechoslovakia to crack down on reformists, assuming that the United States would not intervene and being correct. The Soviet Union slowed the reform but the invasion had consequences for the communist bloc unity.

  • Richard M. Nixon takes office.

    Nixon had plans to revoke the United States from the Vietnam War and to involve China into the community of nations. America's involvement in the Vietnam War ended in 1973. Nixon wanted to relieve the tension between the United States and the Soviet Union. History.state.gov
  • The first man on the moon.

    A challenge fulfilled against Russia that the United States would be the first to place a man onto the moon after Russia had sent satellites and a dog named Laika into space by rocket. Component of a larger Cold War struggle of power and importance. Slide 10: Space Race

  • The presidency of Ronald Reagan begins.

    Reagan challenged the Soviet Union on occasions, specifically challenging the Soviet leader to tear down the Berlin Wall. Soviet ideology and technological advances continued to be challenged and Reagan continued to emphesize that the Soviet Union was of evil intent.
  • The fall of the Berlin Wall.

    East Germans gathered at the wall and the six checkpoints between East and West demanding the gates be opened after Schabowski's press conference was broadcasted.Eventually the guards opened the gates with little to no identity checks. The Berlin Wall had considered to have fallen November 9th of 1989 but was not entirely torn down until later. Wiki
  • Soviet Union (USSR) collapses and dissolves.

    The Berlin Wall is officially considered physically torn down. This is the date that the last Soviet Union (Hammer and Sickle) flag was lowered. The Union ceased to exist. The dissolution marked the end of the Cold War.
