Term 1 timeline for parent communication implementation strategy

  • Before: Welcome pack mail-box drop

    Welcome pack for students and parents sent out. Includes brief teacher introduction letter, mostly-visual positive communications about the new school year and save-the-date info for the meet-and-greet afternoon on Monday 15th January, 2024.
  • Before: Newsletter

    Newsletter sent via email, inviting students and families to attend a meet-and-greet afternoon on Monday 15th of January, 2024. RSVP's returned by Friday the 19th of January.
  • Before: Meet-and-greet afternoon

    Classroom meet-and-greet afternoon tea and parent welcome afternoon. Books and stationery brought in. Formal introduction from the teacher. Presentation for families of how their ongoing support can greatly improve the learning outcomes for their children. Wave of attendance times:
    3:30 – 4:15pm
    4:30 – 5:15pm
    5:30 – 6:15pm
    Details given about final things to expect and bring during first week.
  • During: Week 1-2 Newsletter via email

    Welcoming students and families to week 1. Brief and important information only as lots of prior communication given.
    Newsletters generally include: learning focuses/themes, student awards, key events etc.

    During: Face-to-face meetings with parents

    Throughout Term 1, request parent meetings to get to know students and families better. Discussion areas:
    - culture
    - home language
    - what they see in their child
    - what they want for their child
    - exceptionalities
    - questions about the school/classroom

    During: Email communications

    Across Term 1, teacher and students will share own student work with parents via email. Specific tasks either typed/photographed/videoed. Honest examples of student work seen by parents able to appreciate conversations with teacher about student progress and child's needs.

    During: Phone calls to parents

    Made in the afternoons after school. Plan for at least one positive phone call for each student as early in the term as possible. Leave messages if parent not available.
    Perhaps 5 planned calls each afternoon in first week.

    Teacher and parents sensitively and effectively discuss Term 1 learning progress, wellbeing and any needs or strengths that require additional support for the following term.

    Newsletter (email and hard copy) summing up the highlights of Term 1 and introducing Term 2.
  • After: Portfolio of Term 1 student work

    Pre-planned pieces of student hardcopy/written work learning are sent home on Wednesday of Week 10 as a physical portfolio.
