First Hospital
The first hospital was opened for people with mental disabilities. -
National Home for Union Veterans
A place was designed to assist Civil War veterans after they returned home. -
First Special Classes
The first special education classes began in the late 1800's and early 1900s. Classes and school were developed for children with severe disabilities. -
Movement to lock up "idiots"
The goverment started to put the "idiots" into homes to lessen the reproduction rate. -
IQ Testing
IQ tests were started my the Frenchman, Alfred Binet. He was commissioned by the goverment to create a test to differentiate between normally intellectual children and inferior children. -
More Special Education classes
By 1923, over 34,000 special education students were enrolled in school. -
Horrible Conditions
The institutions were labeled as having horrible living conditions. -
Public School
Parents of students with disabilites starting advocating for their children to get them into public schooling. -

The American Disabilities Act was passed.
