Mokey in Space
Allbert 2 was a male rhesus mokey and was the first monkey to ever go into space(sent to space by the U.S) and was sent to space by the V2 rocket. Scientists did this to better understand what could survive in space and Alber 2 proved to some people theat space could possibly be habitable. -
Sutnik 1 Launch
The Sputnik 1 was the first artificial satellite to ever reach space and was created by the present day Russians. The Sputnik was the size of a normal sized basketball and weighed 183 pounds. Also, the Sutnik 1 took only 98 minutes to orbit Earth. The Sputnik was the main reason for the start of the space race and was a man made spacecraft that was designed to take picture of Earth from orbit. Without the Sputnik being created, America would have had a massively less drive to reach space -
Dog in Space
Laika(originally named Kudryavka) was the first dog in space and was a Russian Husky mix (breed of dog called Laika). Laika was sent by present day Russia into space to understand what animals could survive in the harsh conditions of space. Sadly Laika died while in space from overheating because of a battery malfunction in the spacecraft Laika was in which was the Sputnik 2. This later helped other engineers create and beter design a spacecraft suitable for humans or other animals. -
First U.S Satellite Successfully Launched
The name of the first U.S satellite that was successfully launched was called the Explorer 1 and was in the shape of a bullet. This satellite was launched at Cape Canaveral, Florida four months after Russia's satellite Sputnik was sent into Earths orbit. Explorer 1 ws originally created to test guided missile components in space but later helped scientists to understand that their were intense bands of radiation around the Earth that wa later named the Van Allan radiation belts. -
NASA Founded
NASA is a space research center in which created because of the urge to beat present day Russia in the space race and to understand more information beyond the Earth. NASA has allowed the United States to become more informed about our solar system and even farther. NASA has also improved our technology that has been brought into space to as well to have increased data . -
First Man to Orbit Earth
Yuri Alexiseyevich Gagarin was the first man to orbit the Earth and was also the first man in space. Yuri was a Russian and traveled to space on a spacecraft called the Vostok 1. One orbit around Earth was completed 1 hour and 48 minutes. This event was important because it proved that humans could reach space and survive even in space's harsh environment. Also this event gave hope for more space exploration. -
First U.S Man in Space
Alan B. Shepard Jr. was the first U.S man in space. He accomplished this goal by traveling in the spacecraft named Freedom 7. This event only happened 23 days later than the first man to orbit Earth. This event proved that it was possible for man to reach space and learn more about space's characteristics. -
First U.S Man to Orbit Earth
John Glenn was the first person from the United States to obit the Earth. The spacecraft that he used during this time was the Friendship 7. This event is very important because the United States had been able to create a spacecraft that would fly around the Earth and back to the its surface which ment the U.S was able to learn more information because the could veiw space from all aspects. -
First Woman in Space
The first woman in space was Russian and named Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova. She went to space for the Vostok 6 mission and traveled 48 orbits around the Earth. She stayed in space for a total of 72 hours. This event helped to incourage other women all over the world that they could achieve their goals and prove to the world that women could be importat and successful people. -
First Space Walk
The first person to ever perform the space walk was a Russian named Alexi Leonov. He spent 20 minutes perfoming the space walk and the spacecraft used to send him into space was the Voskhod 2. This event gave important infomation and research about the Moon that later influenced other people to try to achieve more experiments about space that could be very important. -
First U.S Space Walk
The fist person to perform the space walk was Edward H. White. This event took place for the Gemini 4 mission and was performed over the Pacific Ocean near Hawaii and ended near the Gulf of Mexico. This performance lasted only 23 minutes. This event has gave insperation for new ideas for future American space exploration and allowed Americans to understand a different enviornment from the Earth. -
Gemini 7
Gemini 7 was a spacecraft made by the Russians and was created to test the effects on people based on a long-term spacecraft flight. This experiment took 14 days to complete and gave important information on what techniques were best to use while in space for long-terms. -
Apollo 8
Apollo 8 was the first spacecraft to ever send man around the Moon and was made by the U.S. Apollo 8 was also launched from Cape Kennedy, Florida at 7:50 a.m. The crew members on this mission were Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Andres. Apollo 8 came back to the Earth's surface on December 27,1968 near the Pacific Ocean. This event
helped to let man better understand different celestial bodies within space(besides the Earth). -
First Man on the Moon
Neil Armstrong was the first man on the Moon and was American. He traveled to the Moon on a spacecraft named Apollo 11 and set foot on the Moon at 10:56 p.m. Buzz Aldrin(originally named Edwin E. Aldrin Jr.) and Michael Collins were the crew members who acompannied Neil on the Apollo 11 mission. This event was a huge accomplishment in American history because it allowed people to recognize other bodies in space and people relate to them.
