The Magna Carta was the first document that attempted to limit the power of Kings and Lords over their people. -
James VI becomes James I
James VI of Scotland inherits the throne of England and becomes James I of England. -
Charles I
Charles I begins his reign of England, Scotland, and Ireland on this date. Charles is a main player in the British Civil War and was a strong believer in his own Royal Perogative. -
Long Parliament is Established
After Charles I experiences financial issues ruling the country, he is forced to call the long parliament. He uses them to pay for various bills and in return is forced to agree to an act that only allows parliament to be dissolved by its members, not just the king. -
Charles I dissolves Parliament
Charles I dissolves parliament, and rules without it for 11 years. -
The Fighting Begins
The fighting of the British Civil War begins, The puritans or roundheads consisted of most of parliament were fighting the cavaliers who supported Charles I. -
New Model Army
Oliver Cromwell leads the new model army, a professional army created in the hopes of defeating the King's army. -
Pride's Purge
Pride's Pruge was an event orchestrated by Colonel Thomas Pride. He marched into London and forcibly removed all the members of parliament who did not support the new model army. This is atrocious because parliament was meant to be a sacred place where people could speak their mind without a constant threat looming over their heads. -
Charles I execution
Charles actually surrendured to the Scottish in 1646, they handed him over to parliament and he soon escaped captivity and fled to his allies. He was not very successful however and was re-captured, charged with treason and beheaded in January 1649. -
Cromwell Dies
In 1658, Cromwell's reign ended with his death and Charles II's reign began. He re-instated the idea of "fun" and was granted an annual salary by parliament to run the government. -
Treaty of Paris
The treaty of Paris was signed officially ending the 7 years war between the British and French. It outlined the terms of peace which country owns what land. -
The Sugar Act
The first attempt to make the colonies self funded was with the Sugar Act. The British places taxes and levies on molasses and other products -
Stamp Act
A levy was placed on all papers, requiring them to be stamped or watermarked by the stamp. This would anger all the educated people in the colonies who are capable of leading a revolution. -
The Boston Massacre
In 1770, the Boston Massacre occurred. This event signaled the start of the people's unrest towards the British, and gave the revolutionaries some propaganda material. -
Tea Act
The tea act was implemented to help the failing East India Trading Company by lowering the price of the East India Trade Company's tea but not changing the other tea at all. -
Another Treaty of Paris
The British and Americans sign the other Treaty of Paris, formally ending the war and recognizing America as an independant country. -
Boston Tea Party
Enraged by the British imposing the tea act on them. The rebels, dressed as native indians and led by Samuel Adams dump 9000 euro worth of tea into the Boston Harbour. This forces the British to impose even more taxes and levies on the colonists. -
The Intolerable Acts
In 1774, 5 acts were implemented called the intolerable acts. These were a direct response to the Boston Tea Party and included "The Quebec act, the quartering act, Massatussates Harbour act, and the test act. -
Louis XVI
Louis XVI inherits the throne of France, along with it he gains massive debt, a starving country, and plenty of political unrest. -
The Battle of Lexington and Concord
This famous battle was a British attempt to raid a major rebel stash of weapons and ammunition. It is commonly referred to as "The shot heard 'round the world." because it was where the official first shot of the American Revolution took place. -
First Steam Engine
James Watt invents the first reliable steam engine, this is the main driving force for the industrial revolution. -
The British Surrender
After many crushing defeats, the British finally surrender at the battles of Saratoga. This was the last major battle of the American Revolution and was a great victory for the Americans. -
The National Assembly
The national assembly swears the tennis court oath, promising to draft and sign a constitution. -
Fall of the Bastille
The Bastille was stormed and destroyed by various citizens who gained plenty of munitions from the siege. -
The Fish Women
The "fish monger women' of Paris invaded Versailles, the home of King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. They forced the King and Queen to live in Paris as an almost political prisoner. -
Louis XVI arrested
Louis XVI tries to escape his own country by fleeing to Austria with his wife and family. They dress as servants and make it all the way to a few miles from the border of Austria and France before they are captured and sent to prison along with being dishonoured. -
France Declares War
France is now being governed by the National Assembly after the King's betrayl and the National Assembly decided to declare war on Austria to help supplement the food shortages. -
The Reign of Terror Begins
During the reign of terror somewhere between 20,000 and 40,000 people are sentenced to death by the guillotine. -
Robespierre Executed
The National Convention arrested Robespierre previously and on this date he was beheaded by the guillotine. He had become a crazed ruler believing himself to be some kind of God, and he paid the price for it. -
Napoleon Declared Emperor
After playing a major part in the war against Austria, Napoleon is declared Emperor and completely reforms the French government. -
Napoleon Dies
After being exiled twice and not playing any major role in the French government for a few years, Napoleon dies in his home in St. Helena. -
Agricultural Revolution
John Deere created the first steel plow in 1837 helping speed up farming across the Midwest. -
Sewing Machine is Invented
In 1846, Elias Howe created the sewing machine which revolutionized the manufacture of clothing. All of a sudden, clothing began to be made in factories as opposed to at home. -
Diesel Engine
Rudolf Diesel invents the diesel engine. This is much more efficient than the original steam engine and uses diesel instead of coal.
