Russia Industrializes
The government raised taxes, this helped to boost the growth of heavy industry, particular steel. Factories doubled, the worlds longest continuous rail line was created. This affected workers because they were working in unsafe working conditions and therefore revolted. -
The Russo-Japanese War
Japan and Russia competed over Manchuria so they signed a series of agreements, however Russia broke them. Japan responded to this by attacking Russians Port Arthur, Manchuria. Even though this event wasn't huge it still had an impact on Russia and their government. -
Bloody Sunday
About 200,000 workers and their families went to czar's Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. They carried a petition regarding better working conditions, more personal freedom, and elected national legislature. Soldiers were ordered to fire the crowd and more than 1,000 were wounded and several hundred were killed. -
Russia Entering WW1
Nicholas II made the decision to enter in the war, they were unprepared to handle the military and economic cost. Germany had a better army than Russia therefore Germany defeated them. This war showed how weak czarist was in military leadership and this played a role in the revolution in Russia. -
The Provisional Government Topples
Factory workers stormed the Winter Palace in Petrograd. They called themselves the Bolshevik Red Guards, they took over government offices and arrested the leaders of provisional government. This gave revolutionaries what they wanted by equally distributing farmland. -
The March Revolution
Women textile workers in Petrograd led a citywide strike that lasted 5 days. The riot flared up over bread and fuel. In the beginning of the riot soldiers obeyed orders to shoot the rioters but later they agreed with them. -
Signing of Treaty of Brest-Litovsk
In this treaty that Russia and Germany signed, Russia surrendered a large part of its territory to Germany and its allies. Many Russians were very angry about this treaty. The murder of the Royal family made the revolution more intense. -
Civil War in Russia
The revolutionary leader, Leon Trotsky commanded the Bolshevik Red Army to fight against Russia, many Western nations sent military aid to help Russia but did not help them. Russia lost the war and lost around 14 million Russians. While the revolution continued this victory showed that Bolshevik remained in power. -
Lenin Restores Power
After Industrial production, and skilled workers fled to other countries Lenin stepped up in restructuring the government. Lenin placed this new policy called the New Economy Policy this allowed small businesses to sell crops instead of giving them to the government. This affected the revolution because it allowed was in favor of the small businesses. -
Stalin Becomes Dictator
Stalin was a cold, hard Communist Party general. Lenin dies in 1924 and in 1928 Stalin's gained complete control. Stalin's is responsible for many deaths and this helped the revolution.
