Polk sends Sidel to Mexico in order to buy New Mexico and California. Though, when newspapers claim that President Herrera is a traitor, Herrera refuses to meet Sidel. -
US Troops Stationed at Disputed Border
General Taylor leads his army into disputed territory clamied by both Mexico and the US. -
US Declares War
Congress approves $10 million and 50,000 volunteers for the war effort. Polk hopes this will intimidate Mexico into settling the border issue and selling both California and New Mexico to the US. -
US Victories (Battles of Palo Alto/Resaca de la Palma)
Winning both of these battles, Taylor's army drives the Mexicans back across th Rio Grande. -
