Read Aloud
Teachers would allow us to read books with partners. Reading books with a partner made it more exciting as we were able to talk about the book. Not only did we discuss the book, but we were able to help one another when we read. For example, sometimes, I would get stuck in a word, and my partner would help me out by pronouncing the word or explaining what it meant. -
Audio books
Teachers would allow us to follow along with audiobooks. I loved Audiobook because the narrator would make the story so lively and motivated me to listen and pay attention. Also, it eliminated the stress of not understanding the text. For example, not knowing how to pronounce a word. -
Plays
Plays helped with my reading as our teacher would give us roles to act out while reading our scripts. Plays genuinely motivated me since it was different than just reading a book. -
Books I loved reading on my own
The books I loved reading when I was young were books like the Magic Tree House. This book allowed me to use my imagination and ultimately helped me enjoy reading. -
AR Testing
I have always been a competitive person. I remember that when it came down to AR testing, I always wanted to have the highest AR level in my class. AR testing ultimately helped me develop my reading skills. -
Teacher's encouraged me to read at home
Some of my teachers would encourage me to read at home to my parents even if they did not speak English. They would also tell me to try to summarize it in Spanish so my parents could understand the book. -
Taking Notes while reading
I always had a hard time retaining information, but writing notes while reading the text helped me comprehend what I read. Also, this allowed me to check to see if I had missed anything while reading. -
Journals
Journals were vital to me as they helped me be more organized. I used journals to write about specific predictions that I thought were going to happen in the book. The best thing about this was that even If I was wrong, it did not matter. This motivated me to keep reading to see if my predictions were correct. -
Hard Text
When it came down to reading text that I did not understand, I would scan through sections to find headings, subheadings, clues, etc. -
Summarizing reading
Summarize allowed me to get rid of information that was not important.
