    Tiananmen Square Protest

    At Tianaman Square thousands of students in China boldly protested the terms of the Versailles Treaty in 1919, which started the the May Fourth Movement that began Chinese nationalism. In 1989, students asssembled at the square again protesting for political reforms. Thousands more begain joining the protests and by June 3, 1989 the army in China harmfully forced protesters out killing thousands.

    Creation of Israel
    After the Arab Israeli war fighting over the Holy Land, the Jews eventually gained 70% of Palistine (as opposed to the 50% the UN promised them) and Israel became an independent Jewish state.

    Berlin Airlift

    The Soviet Union blocked off all West Berlin to try to make the Allies give up on West Berlin and uniting Germans. With this, Allied planes flew over West Berlin which brought supplies constisting of food, medicine, fuel, and Christmas gifts every three minutes, causing the Soviets to lift the blockade.

    Ten Western European countries, Canada and the U.S. feared Soviet agression so the formed and alliance called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO.

    Formation of the Warsaw Pact
    The Soviets felt threatened by NATO, so themselves, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Hungary Romania, Bulgaria, and Albania formed its own allience to protect themselves. This alliance was called the Warsaw Pact.

    Cuban Missle Crisis

    The Soviets had been building Missels in Cuba, which threatened the United States. President John F. Kennedy puts up a blockade surrounding Cuba to prevent Soviets from installing more missels in Cuba. Soviets and United States tensions grew and almost started a nuclear war, but and agreement was met when the Soviets removed their missels from Cuba and the U.S. promised not to invade Cuba and removing missels in Turkey.

    Ayatollah Khomeini is Surpreme Leader of Iran

    After the Shah westernizes Iran, riots begun because of the secular things which were now influencing the Iranians and the Shah fled. Khmeini comes back from exile and supports revolutionaries seizing the U.S. embassy because the U.S. supported the Shah and Khomeini also becomes the surpreme leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Khomeini encouraged the Muslim radicals to overthrow Secular governments. With this he takes more than 60 American hostages. Soon war broke out between Iraq and Iran.

    Assassination of Egyptian President Sadat
    After his signing of the Camp David Accords, ending hostilities between Egypt and Israel, Egyptian President Anwar el-Sadat was assassinated by angry Muslim extremists during a parade commemorating the Yom Kippur war.
  • Fall of the Berlin Wall

    Fall of the Berlin Wall
    East Germany closed its boarders, so huge protests began in East Germany demanding free travel and free elections. After these demands, the Berlin Wall that had separated East and West Germany for 28 years was openned and the city of Berlin celebrated and climbed up the wall and torn it down by hand. As a result, the East German Communist Party lost power.
  • Assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Rabin

    After Prime Minister Rabin signed the Olso Peace Accords, granting Palestinians self-rule in the West Bank and the Gaza strip, he was assassinated by a Jewish extremist who was unhappy about the agreement.
