Texas Admitted to the Union
The United States successfully accepts Texas from Mexico and adds it to the Union under President John Tyler. -

Slidell was sent to Mexico by President Polk to try and negotiate getting New Mexico and California. This planned failed because President Herrera (Mexico's president) refused to meet with Slidell after he pronounced a "traitor" by Mexican press. -

General Taylor invades the city of Monterrey in a plan to cut off Northern Mexico. Taylor defeats General Pedro de Ampudia's army, and his success helps bring more US troops into the war. -
