Casuality (Cause and Effect)_
Since Jefferson wanted the West to be explored. So he assigned William Clark and Meriwether Lewis and other men to explore the West, following the Mississippi River. Cause and Effect (Casuality) -
The Journey Begins
William Clark and a group of men leave Camp Dubois "under a jentle brease", he writes, and soon after meet up with Meriwether Lewis in St. Louis, MIssouri to begin their expedition called "Corps of Discovery" . Clark was the younger brother of the Revolutionary War hero George Rogers Clark, and Lewis was Jefferson's private secretary. Along the trip there were about four dozen men attending. -
Someone Becomes Ill
Charles Floyed dies due to, what is believed, a ruptured appendix. On Aug. 19, he wrote, "I am verysick and have been foir sometime but have recovered my health again." He was buried near Sioux City, Iowa. Sargeant Charles Floyd is the only man to have died on this expedition. -
Experience at Fort Mandan
Corps of Discover reaches Mandans and Hidatsas. Captains decide to build Fort Mandan acreoss the river from the main town. The men then moved into the Fort on Christmas Eve and stayed there for the winter. -
Occurance in Idaho
The men have traveled across the entire continent and are ready to see the Pacific Ocean. After climing Lehmi Pass (MT-ID border) they were disappointed only to see more mountains and trees. They camped out near this pass after traveling about 20 miles. -
New Life in America
A council is held in Yankton, South Dakota. While the men are there, a baby is born. Lewis takes the baby and wraps him in an Amercan flag, claiming, "he is an American". -
Experience With Shoshone Tribe
The Shoshone's Chef had a daughter named Sacagawea. She was also Charbonneu's wife. She acted as their guide. The tribe also gave the men horses. -
Fort Clatsop
Corps of Discovery reaches the end of their expedition. They celebrate by staying at Fort Clatsop. The captains handed out tobacco and handkerchefs for Christmas presents. Once they left, they dedicated the fort to the Clatsop Tribe. -
Experience With Animals
In Yellowstone, the men experience a rather exhilerating occurance with a grizzly bear. As they cross the plains, a grizzly bear continuously chases them. Eventually, they bear stops. -
Always Plan for Weather
The Bitterfoots are covered with snow, making it difficult to cross. Corps of Discovery decided to wait for all of the snow to melt before attempting crossing. While they wait (during May/ June), the Indians provide them with food. -
Expedition Kills One From Tribe
The men are tired and need a place to stay. Lewis spots eight Blackfeet warriors. The settle in to share camp with the warriors. They woke up to the sound of the Blackfeet trying to steal their horses and guns. The men begin to fight to get their things back, and through the fight two Blackfeet are killed.
