Headright System
The government granted a certain number of acres to the head of the household, who could ask 100 acres for himself, and 50 additional acres for each member of the household. It got to the point where too many people wanted land and the fact that there was not enough land for everyone. -
Articles of Confederation
This was the help pay debts, settle arguments between states, maintain relationships with other countries, and set up postal services for going between states. The outcome of this was, it could not tax and could not regulate trade between states or with foreign nations. The countries leaders thought the government under the Articles of Confederation was too weak, and that it had to be changed. -
Cotton Gin
Eli Whitney invented this in 1793 in the south because it removed seeds from cotton much quicker than it could by hand. The original selling product tobacco, decreased as the cotton gin became popular so more farmers planted cotton. Slavery increased because both slaves and cotton gin got more work done. -
Yazoo Land Fraud
Georgia lost their western territory by the Yazoo Land Fraud when legislatives got bribed and citizens were outraged. In trade they helped the Cherokee Indians lead the Trail of Tears in1838. -
Land Lottery
John Milledge created Land Lottery for a plan to award people with a chance at winning land for families. The population grew because many people wanted a chance at winning land. -
Syllabary
Sequoyah grew up with a talent of writing and created a set over eighty written symbols that represented the syllables for Cherokee language. The ability to write led to the establishment of a Cherokee newspaper, the "Cherokee Phoenix", which printed the news in both English and Cherokee. -
Native American Removal
In 1830, congress passed the Indian Removal Act which, they had to move west to the Mississippi River (in present day Oklahoma) When Indians traveled, that time became know as the trail of tears, because over four thousand members died from sickness, storms, blizzards, and sorrow. -
Creation of Railroads
The railroads were built to send goods to the markets from city to city. The railroads were built around major cities to bring business to the towns.
